Project 2C- Olmec Art

Home | Page Title

The Olmec culture has based their society on art. It is a reat influence in their religion, beliefs and society. The art that will be displayed here was discovered in the area of the geat Olmec centers. This area being San Lorenzo, Tenochtitlan, La Venta, Tres Zapotes, Chalcatzingo and La Mojarra. In thsi area over 170 monuments have been found. I found pictures of many statues, that were also found here.

A. Observation- In thsi art waor I see the simialriets to the animals and the humans. I see the large lips and the slanted eyes, as discussed in my research. The pieces ar emad of jade and other indigenouse clays to the Olmec.

B. Interpretation- This art work is a represntative of a half-person, half-beast. The Olmec beleved that after death a man would become an animal and that each person had an animal spirit.

C. Judgement- I choose this art work because it represents what I discussed in my research. I think the art work is great! It is from such a long time ago, but yet the details are so precise. I think that is why I like it.

D. Questioning- I would like to know were the art pieces evr traded for goods to surrounding societies or where they strictly for religious purposes?

The Olmec did use this pieces as a gift or reprentative of their gods, Do you think their gods would punish them for being traded?
